SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

INTRODUCTION

Anam Cara spiritual direction deepens awareness of the existential-meaning aspects of being human in a reflective manner that it is neither psychotherapy or counseling.

The core of this form of spiritual direction is caring, contemplative listening, which marks sacred space in the midst of ordinary events and encounters, deepening our sense of meaning and purpose in life.

The director not only compassionately listens, but helps the individual discern, using Ignatian exercises, new paths, ways forward, and steps for self growth and wholeness.

Your soul, meaning your deepest, core identity, knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.

THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTION PROCESS

  1. Establishing the Individual’s Personal and Spiritual Narrative. The director helps the individual understand and tell their spiritual and life journey thus far, tracing out the personal narrative and key themes.
  2. Uncovering Challenges and Obstacles to Wholeness. The individual then identifies any ongoing challenges or obstacles to spiritual development and wholeness. These are then explored in a non-judgmental, caring manner that seeks to broaden self awareness and spiritual understanding.

  3. Discerning Alternatives. Once an inventory of obstacles and unhelpful practices are established, healthier alternatives are imagined and explored, with the individual selecting some to engage and try.
  4. Testing Alternatives. The new forms and paths of understanding and practice are then tested using the Ignatian principles of consolation and desolation, methods of discernment that rely on examining the individual’s holistic responses.
  5. Internalizing Alternatives. Those alternative understandings, practices, and paths that have given consolation and proved beneficial are then reinforced, personalized, and internalized, thus changing the spirituality of the individual for the better.

Anam Cara Spiritual Direction – An Introduction

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
